Judge the decision, not the result

The Math of an Edge

Good process can lose; bad process can win

A trade can be well-planned and lose. A reckless trade with no stop can win. If you judge yourself on outcomes, the market will randomly reward your worst habits and punish your best ones, and you will learn exactly the wrong lessons. The only defence is to grade the decision separately from the result: did I take a setup I'd defined, size it correctly, and exit where I said I would? That is a question with an answer, and it's the question Wick's Discipline score is built on.

Check yourself

A trade with no stop that happened to make money should be graded as…

  1. A win — money is money
  2. A bad decision that got a good outcome correct
  3. Proof stops aren't needed

Getting paid for a bad process is the most expensive thing that can happen to a beginner, because it teaches the habit that eventually costs everything.
