Write it down before you need it

Portfolio & Risk

A plan is a promise to your future self

Decide in advance: how much goes in and how often, what the split is, when you rebalance, and what would genuinely make you change course. Write it down while calm. During a crash you will not be able to think clearly, and the written plan is the only thing standing between you and the decision you would regret.

Check yourself

The point of writing your plan down in advance is that…

  1. It guarantees returns
  2. Calm-you makes better decisions than panicking-you correct
  3. It impresses other people

Everyone has a plan until the market falls 25%. The written one is the only kind that survives that.
