Your timeframe decides everything

Investing Basics

Match the money to the horizon

Money you need in a year does not belong in stocks — a bad twelve months is completely normal and would wreck the plan. Money you will not touch for fifteen years can absorb three bad years without it mattering. Before any decision about what to buy, answer when you need it back.

Check yourself

Money you need for something in eight months belongs…

  1. In stocks for maximum growth
  2. Somewhere stable — the horizon is too short correct
  3. In whatever is trending

A perfectly good investment can be a terrible decision if the timing of your need does not match it.
