The post-loss routine

Trader Psychology

Recap, journal, stop

After a loss, the routine matters more than the loss itself. Recap what happened, journal what could improve, then stop trading for the day. The loss ends the session, not the account.

Chasing it makes it worse

Chasing a loss intraday, trying to win it back before the session ends, is one of the most common ways a single bad trade turns into a genuinely damaging day.

Demo removes the temptation

Some traders build a hard rule: after the first loss of the day, they stop trading live and move to a demo account if the itch to trade is still there, removing real money from the equation entirely.

Check yourself

The recommended routine immediately after taking a loss is to…

  1. Recap, journal what could improve, then stop trading for the day correct
  2. Immediately take another trade to get it back
  3. Increase size on the next setup to recover faster

A structured recap-and-stop routine contains the damage instead of compounding it.
