Tagging so the data can answer questions

Journaling & Review

Categories turn a diary into a dataset

A journal of paragraphs is unsearchable. Add a few consistent tags — the setup name, the timeframe, the session, whether you followed your plan — and suddenly you can ask real questions: what's my expectancy on this one setup? Do I lose money after 2pm? Are my plan-following trades better than my improvised ones? Almost always they are, by a margin that ends the argument about discipline permanently.

The point of tagging trades consistently is…

  1. Neatness
  2. So you can filter and compare — expectancy by setup, by session, by whether you followed the plan correct
  3. To share with others

Consistent tags are what let you separate a good setup traded badly from a bad setup, which look identical in raw P&L.
