What to actually write down

Journaling & Review

Six fields, thirty seconds

A journal nobody fills in teaches nothing, so keep it short enough to survive a bad day. Six fields do the job: the setup you thought you saw, where you entered, where the stop went, where the target went, how you felt, and — added afterwards — what actually happened. The fields about your intent matter most. Anyone can reconstruct the price later; nobody can reconstruct what they were thinking.

Check yourself

The most valuable thing to record is…

  1. The profit or loss
  2. What you intended and why, before the outcome correct
  3. The time of day

P&L is recoverable from any broker statement. Your reasoning at the moment of entry is gone forever if you don't write it down.
